Angela

“Oh my god. Why are the cops here?” Stupid question, and we both know it, but I can’t seem to stop myself from asking it anyway. The squad car’s lights flash red and blue across Clay’s face like some obscene graffiti.

“Angela, it’s going to be fine. Let me do the talking to whoever it is and I’ll handle it.” He rolls his head from one side to the other. “Maybe you can help me up though.”

I nod, and help Clay stand up. His pants are still unfastened though, because why not make this as awkward as possible. I position myself in front of him as he fumbles with his pants.

My heart is banging away inside my chest. But we haven’t done anything illegal, have we? Last time I checked, failed attempt at a blowjob was not a criminal act.

I hear the crunch of feet on gravel before the glare of the flashlight sweeps across my face. “Clay? Is that you?”

There’s a pause before Clay answers. “Hey there Greg. What’s going on?”

The cop with the blinding flashlight laughs, but it’s that kind of laugh that just hangs there in the air because nothing is actually funny about the situation. “That’s my line, buddy. You want to tell me what’s going on out here in the middle of the night with you and the Big Pig all dressed up like you’ve been at a shitty bank robbery re-enactment?”

“Watch your mouth, Prante.” Clay puts his arm around me, pulling me closer to himself. Okay, that sucked, but now certainly isn’t the time to make a scene about one of the million crappy nicknames I picked up during the long, embarrassing years of being the token fat friend in the popular clique.

I try to squirm away from him, give us both a little space, but he just holds me tighter. “We’re heading out of here. Just had a spot of car trouble, that’s all.”

Officer Greg Prante takes his time walking over to Clay’s car, then thumps the heavy end of his flashlight against the hood a couple of times. The moment stretches out with the light flashing into our eyes and the monotonous thump, thump, thump of the metal against the edge of Clay’s car.

“I’m not buying it.” He finally turns off the flashlight, leaning into the car and staring at Clay across me, as if I don’t exist. “You wanna try again, or should I just take you downtown and run you both through processing?”

This idiot obviously has some sort of beef with Clay and is throwing his weight around like a little kid throws a tantrum. But if I actually end up with criminal charges and a freaking mug shot, I’ll definitely have to move. In a small town like Valentine, my reputation was the most important thing I had.

“Officer, Clay’s just being a gentleman about it. I’m embarrassed to say it out loud, but we had gone out on a date and just pulled off here to…” I don’t have to fake the blush that stains my cheeks.
